EGCC U9 v Crawley Eagles U9 – Sunday 20 May 2018
This was East Grinstead’s first soft ball match of the season. The opposition, Crawley Eagles , had won the division last year with E Grinstead not far behind. The teams usually compete well and this match was no exception. East Grinstead Captain Amy Newnham won the toss and asked Eagles to bat. The first few overs put Eagles well behind as they lost several wickets and a feature of this was the bowling of Louis Whyman who, in his first competitive match, bowled three in succession – quite a performance! More experienced players from Eagles corrected the early demise and the score improved dramatically as there were fewer wickets lost in the 2nd half of the innings . All the E G bowlers were good on the day but a very reasonable final total of 293 was achieved by Eagles with Falah and Haroon adding over 20 runs in the last four overs (teams start with 200 and 5 runs are deducted for each wicket lost!) .
A very good start to E Grinstead’s innings by William Blackburn and Louis Whyman added 18 runs without losing a wicket. Good performances by all the middle order meant that E Grinstead were in a strong position with Fred Collett, Lewys Hunt and Amy Newnham hitting the ball hard and scoring boundaries on a regular basis. An excellent spell of quick bowling from De Silva, who bowled very straight in taking 4 wickets, made the difference and Eagles won by 16 runs.
