EGCC 3rds v Dormansland 1sts
19 May 2018
Due to a few people in the higher teams being unavailable we had only 1 or 2 3rd team ‘regulars’ in our side on Saturday so it was up to the rest of us 4th players to step up to the plate and see if we could deliver a result against a Dormansland first team traveling down to Grinstead for their first match of the season.
Any hope that their best bowlers were watching the FA cup or attending the Royal Weddings were soon dashed after we lost the toss and were put into bat against an accurate bowling outfit with a disciplined fielding unit. The top order dug in as best we could against their onslaught – their left hander opener had figures of 2-16 off 9 summed it up) – unfortunately we lost the wickets of Mark Wills and Myself just before drinks. Now the baton was passed to the quick firing trio of Ash, Deepak (not out) and Bhav to start ticking over the score board – getting some good singles and boundaries but sadly getting skittled out before they could push through for a big score . In fact 5 batsmen got between 15-20 or so runs but no one was able to really push north of fifty, which probably would have made the difference and so that left us all out for 115.
Rumor had it that one of the other teams had quite a few players fasting for Ramadan so tea turned out to be a huge feast. When their opening batsman spooned his shot to square leg in the first over I assumed that the extra tray of devilled eggs we strategically placed at their end of the table may have done the trick of slowing them down – sadly it wasn’t to be, as their next batsmen added an extra 65 runs for their partnership.
Their progress was very nearly halted with some fantastic bowling from the youngsters Jake Lingard and Liam Dawes at one end with Deepak at the other this was causing Dormansland serious angst as they lost 4 wickets for just 6 more runs. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite finish them off and they got over the line.
Everyone put in huge efforts and it’s difficult to highlight just a handful but some notable performances were :
Fielder of the day : Liam Dawes who was an example to everyone, fielded superbly.
Bowler of the day : Jake Lingard – barely bowled a bad ball all day.
Batsman and All round player of the day : Deepak bowled great and was last man standing in the batting.
