Saturday, 4 May – Brighton
The new look 3rd XI began their campaign against Brighton 3rd XI at Fonthill. The new signings of G Harris and the addition of J Adkin and K Hunt gave the 3rds a great lift for the first game of the season. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, we had a no show which left us with 10 men. Ansley won the toss and with the batting ability and the fresh deck, chose to bat.
A solid start with Adkin smashing a 6 off the 4th ball of the match gave Grinstead the momentum. After a quick fire 12, Adkin nicked a wide one to the keeper. Ansley entered and again after a decent start got a standard LBW plumb in front! L Dawes entered the arena with a sprightly 7. K Hunt continued to martial the innings ticking along nicely as more wickets fell. He got out after playing on. A fantastic knock of 60 made him a MOM contender.
Rear-guard action from Goodwin, Kapadia and R Hunt gave the 3rds a score of 153.
J Adkin opened the bowling and got 2 very quick wickets after some sporadic bowling. Toms dried up the runs the other end after bowling very well. After some fantastic fielding from the boys the pressure began to build. Enter the spinners. Yousif and Harris. Yousif bowled a fantastic spell of 7 overs – 9 runs – 2 wickets. But the star of the show was Harris after figures of 4.2overs – 3 maidens – 9 runs – 5 wickets. He tore out the heart of the Brighton middle order leaving them shivering with fear (or maybe it was just very cold!).
Harris took the last wicket of Brotherton with a grubber that even Tendulkar would have struggled with.
A fantastic effort from the boys and a great day out. Maximum points in the bag which is a great start to the season. Saturdays see the 3rd XI in a derby fixture against Forest Row away.
